I haven’t been getting mani/pedis for the last half year to basically save money. If I have time, I can do my mani/pedis at home and they look just as nice… but every now and then I just don’t wanna do all that work! I gave in recently to get a manicure with my girl back at home… and I may be late in the nail game, but I got GELISH (Gel Nail Polish) for the first time. This is the same as your regular manicure except they are using a gel polish and UV light… which Sally Hansen’s Tough as Nails has nothing on. This is super strength polish! I got a gelish french manicure (costing about 30$) and I fell in love at first sight. My nails were down to nubs when I went in. I really wanted to get some fake tips put on, but my friend told me to try the Gelish and grow my natural nails out. I’m so glad I did because now my nails have grown out and aren’t weak and brittle as a result of fake nail application. When I get fake tips put on, I keep em short anyway… just enough to look feminine, so now that my nails have grown out… I’m very happy with the look of my nails and will definitely keep up with Gelish. The best thing is that it lasts about a month if you take care of them, which is better than getting a fill in every 2 weeks. They have all kinds of colors and gels as well. I just had to share this goodness with all of you…

More information on the different types of Gel Nail polish:

Shellac is made by CND (Creative Nail Design), which is a more popular and well advertised brand. Shellac only has 40 or so colors. Shellac is gel and polish.

Gelish, which is made by Harmony, boasts thicker, longer wear and bigger bottles and less expensive at the same time. Gelish has about 80 colors or more, including solid colors and sparkles. Gelish is also a true gel polish, a mixture of gel and pigment, giving brighter colors and thicker solution.
Both are applied like a polish, are cured with UV (or LED lamps which makes curing time even quicker with Gelish) and both last longer than normal polish. Both can layer colors and make nail art easy. Neither needs the natural nail buffed before application.

Basically… You can’t go wrong with trying both and figuring out which one you love! I’m a creature of nature though and think I’m going to stick with Gelish. Hope.Strength.Courage

Every year, especially during October, women across the United States AND fem-fATL spread Breast Cancer Awareness.  Big or small, too much or none at all… as women, we have em’… BOOBS.  It’s so important to check yourself for lumps and unusual circumstances in your breasts… because this cancer can be stopped before severe problems, or death, occur.  We can’t rely on our annual gyno visit and the chance that technology and doctors will save us if we fall prey to the disease.  Prevention, as always, is the key.  The same way you can do kegels just about anywhere… you can always check your boobs out, so there’s no excuse!  Check them in the shower if you have to.  Whichever boob you are checking, raise the same arm and place your hand on your back.  With your free hand, put two fingers together and gently press on your breast around your nipple and go all the way around and work your way outwards.  You should feel for unusual lumps or pain that is caused from gentle pressing.  (Don’t have too much fun now!)  If you do experience the unusual, definitely schedule an appointment with your doctor immediately.  You may find out that everything is perfectly normal… and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with knowing!  If you find out something is wrong… then you are taking the preventative steps to saving your life.  XoXoXo

Sidenote:

Living in a such a beautiful city and never experiencing what all it has to show has got to suck! Therefore, last week when my friends from the “DMV” invaded ATL, I took it upon myself to kidnap fem-fATL‘s Vanguardista (from her new STYLISH Eastside home) and turned us into tourists for a day.

I visited the MLK center several years ago on a Black College Tour, but this visit was different for some reason. I guess since im older and am able to comprehend more enabled the tour to be more effective than when I was younger. I wanted to share our photos to encourage all my ATLiens to take the initiative to take advantage of your city, especially if its FREE!!!

“The name is Von, but if you’re lucky I’ll let you call me Vonney.” I manage a wellness clinic in Athens Georgia, where we do acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, and tai chi. Currently I am at the ripe age of 26, and just started pursuing my passion in photography. So look out world! Three things that everyone knows about me is: I love coffee, sarcasm is my middle name, & I don’t watch tv. I would like to think that I am funny, outgoing, humble, adventurous, smart, dorky, witty, sweet, blunt and maybe more- but hey, everyone loves a good mystery. I enjoy the simple things in life, and I absolutely love laughing.

I’ve met DJ X last year during one of fem-fATL‘s event at Sutra Lounge. We were introduced through ATL‘s own Jay Envy. It’s not everyday you meet great, and genuine people. We spoke for hours, and ever since then, we became two peas in a pod. I’ve had the opportunity to hear him play, and let me tell you, he knocked my socks off! DJ X has played at Sutra Lounge, Whiskey Park, Halo, Apache Cafe, Posh, Hole In The Wall, Glenn Hotel Rooftop, and more! Not only is he a great artist, but two weeks ago, he’s volunteered to clean up and help the residents of Alabama, GA following the devastating storms they’ve encountered. What a great heart he has!

Who is this guy??…

1. Who is DJ X ? A bat cave dwelling insomniac.

2. When did you know you wanted to become a DJ? I was extremely shy growing up. I always had an interest in the music industry but it was in the management, agent, label side of things. In those positions you’re not front and center. But around 15 I became hooked on the DJ culture. Hearing legendary deejays on the radio in New York and watching DMC battles, I had to pick up my first set of crappy turntables.

3. Who inspires you? As much as big celebrities or figures may inspire to me an extent I really get motivated by actual people I know. Hearing friends share their dreams along with the wins and losses along the way give me a high. Seeing other people defy the obstacles and pursue what their passionate about inspires me.

4. Where was your first gig? Probably some social function, like a birthday party or something.

5. What is your style? A melting pot. I’m from the East Coast, lived in the South for the past 9 years and my family has Caribbean roots. All those influences play a part in my record selection. I love the raw boom bap rap from the North East. I appreciate the bounce and energy from south of the border and can vibe to Reggae, Dancehall and Latin records all night. I call it Good Life Music.

6. As we all know, the scene is filled with a wide variety of people, how do you prepare yourself before playing? I don’t have a set routine on show days but during the week I have to find moments to break away to focus. Whether that’s grabbing a book or finding a quiet place to grab a drink and cigar, I need that to keep me sane.

7. How do you read your crowd? I’ve had club managers tell me to play a bad song because people weren’t buying drinks. They wouldn’t leave the dance floor. I take that as a sign that I was reading the crowd well. Though i’m sure the guest were just being cheap #recession

8. What’s in the future for DJ X? To be honest I don’t know. I could make up a bunch of stuff and embellish things but for what. I’ve recently relocated to Atlanta where I’m the new kid on the block. It’s like starting over but I’ve met a few great people that have helped me so far. I’m at a point where my resume-lists packed clubs around the country to 10,000 seat arenas where I’ve performed on the same bill as Larry King, Dwayne Wade, Michael Phelps, Joe Montana and many other notable sports, business and political leaders, including former President Bush (I know, I know but how many can say they’ve opened up for a President!) My short term goal is to partner with a management or talent booking company that could use my wide range of experience to help me expand nationally and internationally. I’m at a point where I feel I’ve maxed all I can do by myself and can benefit from an agency with an established network. If you’re that person hit me up!

9. Where would be your ideal place to play? I’d love to play Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium. Growing up I would see those historic palaces in the distance. Though my neighborhood was disconnected from that high life, I’d drive by and see those venues every week. That made it seem attainable. It was a reality to me.

10. Who would you like to DJ with? It’d be an honor to spin for my favorite artists: Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Kanye. Deejays: A-Trak, DJ Scratch, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Cassidy. I’m always looking for a challenge. Artist like Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and comedian Russell Peters are incorporating Deejays into their tours. I’d like to do something like that. Work with an entertainer that one wouldn’t expect a DJ to partner with. That would really be an outlet for some dope creative energy.

11.  How was your experience competing for MTV TJ? That opportunity was so unexpected. To summarize it, MTV, known for coining the term VJ (Video Jockey) began a search this past July for their first TJ (Twitter Jockey). In essence that person would become an MTV personality, reporting from events, award shows and interviewing celebrities. They would be the “face” of MTV’s social network world. MTV picked 20 candidates from across the country. After a few online blog and twitter based challenges I was selected as part of the Top 5 and flown to New York to compete in a final series of challenges and appear on a live elimination show. I was there an entire week working with MTV staff to produce segments, host events, and report from concerts. It was wild meeting the Executive VP, Dave Sirulnick, who has been the man behind MTV’s programming for over a decade. To walk in his office and hear that he has listened to my mixes was an honor. Needless to say I came in as the 2nd runner up. I got to establish some great relationships through that with the other candidates and MTV staff. I was invited back in October to spin for their annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration. I was amped up to be a part of that event as the first time around I was there representing my social networking abilities and didn’t have the chance to showcase my Deejaying.

12. What made you you want to compete, and would you do it all over again? The $100,000 winning salary. haha. Seriously, what’s the chances of opportunities like that coming your way. I’ve studied the industry since I’ve been a young kid and I jumped at the thought of being able to actually get paid to do what I’ve been doing for the past 13 years. A second time? No. lol. but if you mean in retrospect would I?  For sure!

13. What did you learn from that experience as a person and artist? As an artist I got to see first hand how the entire MTV staff busts their asses to be the leading media and entertainment outlet. To be successful you have to match and surpass that hustle. Making it that far I realized I could compete at the top level. I was 2 spots away from having an office there. I’ve tried my hardest over the years to be set a part from the hundreds of thousands of deejays, entertainers, bloggers, etc and that experience assured me that all the sleepless nights don’t go unnoticed. As a person I learned to always be myself in every aspect of who I am. I honestly didn’t think i’d make it that far cause I felt I didn’t fit the mainstream mold. My blog is much more likely to feature indie pop, rock, electro or hip hop as opposed to Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, though I’m fans of both, I simply post what I personally enjoy. I did not attempt to flip my personality and become someone else online to sway the MTV staff. Luckily they were drawn to just that. “Be transparent. Find your own identity and don’t change for anyone.”

DJ X will be in action this Saturday (5/21) at POSH Nightclub spinning to a special musical tribute for Kanye West’s musical career! Definitely not one to miss!!

What she has to offer a man: Loyalty, spontaneity, and great conversation. Being loyal can not be taught, it comes from within. When you find a person that brings it out of you it’s a beautiful thing. I can be very spontaneous love to try new things and I try to stay on top of the latest.

Her ideal ATL guy: My ideal ATL guy he would actually be from ATLanta :0) No, but seriously tall, brown skin and has a big ego! I kid I kid (but not really). Just an all around good guy with a bad streak who is family oriented!

Things that attract her to a man: I like my men like my music… different types. I love clean dreads with tattoos and knows how to dress, tall, clean cut with a nice smile. It’s the small things that get my attention. The kind of watch you wear to the shoes that are on your feet. I almost forgot I love a man that smells good! When a nice looking man passes by me and his scent lingers its love!
