So let’s just say I’m riding on my partner, urbanSocialite’s, coat tail when it comes to fashion… I am simply the hair guru to her expertise on fashion forward trends.
Up First is ATL‘s own Keri Hilson. Her hair truly matches her eclectic style featuring vibrant colors and avant-gard jewelry. She is definitely an iconic figure for the “new do”. Hilson’s signature do is usually a choppy cut with a colorful bang. To acheive this look, apply an extension (preferably 8″ to 10″ piece) to the bang and cut accordingly.
My kinky coif ladies, this is one of the best do’s of the summer. It is easy to achieve and maintain. For my natural sistas, after shampooing the hair (make sure to keep hair wet), apply a heavy moisturizer such as Organic Root Stimulators’s olive oil lotion or carrot oil lotion and part into 20 sections. Once hair is parted, two-strand twist and coil hair into Bantu knots and let air dry.
The Boho Braid became extremely popular by L.C. from the show The Hills on MTV. This style is oh so easy, sexy, flowy, and free for a simple summer look. To achieve this look, simply part hair on the side or in the middle, then flat braid a small section of the front of the hair. !Simple!
Above is the infamous Soft Body Curl. This is style is for the conservative and sophisticated lady in you. Great thing about this style is even in the ATL heat, you can’t tell when the hair begins to get frizzy. The best way to get this look is with Mizani’s Thermasmooth line. This line is great because it incorporates anti-humectant chemicals into the follicle leaving hair to preserve its shape. After shampoo and conditioning, apply a small amount of Nairobi Foam Wrap and roll from wet with big plastic rollers a.k.a magnetic rollers. F.Y.I- Hair must be set under a hard-bonnet dryer & Nairobi Foam Wrap works well on all textures!
Now we know ATL is officially hitting the 100-degree mark but many of us don’t have the balls to sport Amber Rose’s non-existent hair. But if Cassie can shave half of her head, Amber Rose can rock the “Damn-Near Bald” look. On the correctly shapened head, this style can be sleek, sexy, yet eclectic. The beauty of this style is that it is EXTREMELY easy to maintain. I’d recommend Luster Silk’s Pink Shortlook Texturizer, Duke’s Greaseless Holding Hairdress, and a meduim grade boar-bristled brush. Simple as pie!
The “Sensual Bun” screams ”an elegant dinner with my man”. Although this is a bun, its messy, fun, and can be easily achieved. On a dry and clean head, simply brush hair to the back corner of the head near the nape of the neck. Secondly, curl hair into soft spirals with a 1″ Gold n’ Hot ceramic curling iron. Lastly, loosen curls with a wrap brush and begin to twist and pin into a messy bun without tuckin in the ends of hair.
Emos! fem-fATL loves you!! Although this is a dark and mysterious enclave of people, their hair rocks. It can almost be considered the new-age grundge look. Emo hair is definitely put on the “Hell Yes” book for the summer. The cut is assymetrical, spikey, and choppy. To achieve this look, first find a great eclectic cut that fits you; second, finish off the style with Tigi’s Beadhead’s Headbanger wax spray. This product gives you a hard finish that makes it difficult for hair to flow (which in this case is good).
Hot Humid ATL makes this style hard to usually come by around this season but don’t worry, there is still hope. The “Bone Str8″ look will never die, it just takes great heat concentration, a heat protectant, and an anti-humectant product. To preserve straighter looks, first shampoo and then use Joico’s Conditioning Chelating Treatment. It protects your hair from heat and UV rays while providing moisture and amino acids. While wet, apply Biosilk’s Silk Therapy Serum which is a glosser that gives the hair greaseless shine. Once hair is blown dry, use a FHI ceramic flat iron to finish off the job (FHI’s are pricier than CHI’s but damn it your hair will feel like silk).
fem-fATL also loves our colorful Scene community. The hair is very similar to Emo’s only more colorful, literally! To achieve this style, repeat steps given for Emos but add colorful hair extensions rather than dying the hair simply because ammoniun-based hair color is drying and can damage the follicle. Our model above has Fire Truck Red extensions but anyone can get creative. A newer and funner extension is the “coon” extension which is striped like the end of a racoon’s tail.
Homegirl above is wearing the hell out that cut! I like to call this the “Mini-Messy Crop”. This is a signature hairstyle for th fems and divas of the ATL. What I adore about this hairstyle is that it is fluid. It incorporates a jagged pivot cut with punk rock, soul, and sohpistication. This style can be turned into a faux-hawk or a sexy modern bob. Ladies stay away from spritz on this do! Summer in ATL is about acheiving movement of the hair but at the same time not allowing the hair to frizz or go flat. Maintaining this hairstyle calls for Avlon’s KeraCare Humecto conditioner which is bomb at hydrating and humectifying the hair shaft. Works great for this style simply because it calls for alot of heat on the follicle. After hair is dry, flat iron with CHI 1/2 ceramic flat iron and then use Mizani’s HRM Humectant hair spray to finish the job.
Alright, well that’s it for the summer. Hope you guys got a grasp of what’s in store for this summer…Stay tuned in a couple months for Fall’s Hair Hotness!
Till Next Time, SMOOCHEZ!!!

That is a beautiful pic of Keri Hilson on the main page. Wow. and I think you hit the nail on the head with this post… these hairstyles define this summer. I see all kinds of baldhead scallywags walkin around with these do’s… when you gonna put extensions in my hair?

The Keri Hilson multi-colored bang is HOT too, but its losing the uniqueness, everyone is doing it…I almost considered it too. Im ready for a change for my hair, drastic change!
