the Kenny Burns Effect

kenburns

I’ve been a twitter feign for some time now (twitter: jeniferv), mostly trying to connect with fellow ATLiens and artists. Through twitter, I started following ATL celebrity resident/music man Kenny Burns and realized- this guy is in touch with his audience! It didn’t take long for me to land on the Kenny Burns Show, digging through his Atlanta video segments. What intrigued me most about the show were of course the videos from Atlanta. It’s cool seeing him drive down 75/85 (past places I see on a daily basis), but also giving us the scoop on the spots he frequents in the city. Kenny is a life-style expert with celebrity friends, a funny personality, and well- just a cool vibe all around. I got the chance to ask Kenny a couple questions, which he so graciously responded.

fem-fATL: The Kenny Burns show provides a platform for sharing your life lessons and experiences. What lessons can we expect to receive on the Kenny Burns show?

KB: The Kenny Burns Show actually started out as a “Talk Show” concept, a la Arsenio Hall. Then I started to think about the format of traditional talk shows and how they are boring. So, I decided to start taping myself while I was on the road last year hosting the Heineken Red Star Soul tour. TKBS then started becoming a where to eat, shop, sleep (hotels) and party experience. I then found that people liked that, but were more entertained by me and anything I did and/or said. Like “Touch YO!self or “Crucial”…lol. So, now TKBS is a Full Lifestyle Experience through my eyes. It could be all concert from a Drake Show or me at DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Home talking about digital and analog.

The lessons I teach, are those of Independence from conventional thinking, Respect for ALL PEOPLE and Passion for what You LoVe! I want to show PEOPLE there is a way to have a family and be a Rockstar, or that You can be successful in music or fashion with out selling Your Soul or signing Your life away. All this can be done with integrity! Although originally from the DC area, Kenny moved to Atlanta to attend college at Morris Brown and has been rocking the ATL scene since the mid 90s. Kenny’s had a long and prosperous career in the music industry, breaking unknown talents and working with big names such as Jay Z, Monica, Dream, Kanye, Young Gunz, and Samantha Ronson. He also launched a successful upscale men’s fashion line called Ryan Kenny with friends Derek Dudley and Ryan Glover, available at Saks Fifth Avenue and featured in Jay-Z’s music video for ‘Change Clothes’.

fem-fATL: Kenny Burns is pretty aspiring, but who inspires you?

KB: I’m inspired by Art, Passion, LoVe and anyone (thing) honestly that is Progressive. Too many to name.

fem-fATL: What Atlanta music artists do you think are up and coming that we should be paying attention to?

KB: Well, in The A, B.O.B aka Bobby Ray, but I’m also really feeling Outasight (NYC), Drake (Toronto) and XO (DC).

fem-fATL: So you are a self proclaimed fashion whore. In one word, how would you describe your fashion sense?

KB: CLASSiC.

fem-fATL: What stores do you like in Atlanta?

KB: Neiman Marcus

fem-fATL: I’m going to proclaim you as a twitter slut as well with almost 3000 updates! What does the twitter community mean to you?

KB: I think it’s another great Social Network. I’m sure there are many more to come…
