Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service utilizing instant messaging, SMS or a web interface. I’m going to save you from a rehash of Twitter‘s history and technical setup. There are more than enough links on a Google search to help you out in that regard if you are interested. Instead I’m just gonna talk a little about Twitter and me and then let you know a list of ATL women you should be following!

Nearly two years after Twitter kicked off, I sent my first tweet. The date was February 4, 2008, and I tweeted… “im in class”. Funny enough, I joined Twitter for a class I was taking called the ‘Design of Online Communities’. Twitter had been popular in the mainstream for about a year (the 2007 South by Southwest marked this transition) and a group of students in my class were conducting a research study on the emerging social network; which I obliged to take part in as a research subject.

Like most newbies to Twitter, I had a difficult time ‘getting it’. For quite some time I only followed one person, which was @Stammy a colleague of mine at school. At the time @Stammy was more or less just an acquaintance of mine. I knew him from school and knew he had a pretty popular technology blog, but we had not yet become friends. Eventually I began adding more people from school, but at the time the mass of society had not yet joined the ‘Twitter conversation’ so there were few people for me to engage with. It was mostly the techies and nerds who first embraced Twitter.

During my first year on Twitter I tiptoed along the drop-off border, barely utilizing the service. The drop-off rate on Twitter is high. One statistic puts the percentage of people who join Twitter and end up not using it at 40%. I believe this statistic is declining, yet a high drop-off rate is reasonable to believe. The Twitter community makes little sense when you don’t take ownership of it or develop your own personal purpose. I’d say for a good year from the time that I first tweeted, I hadn’t really joined the ranks of twitterdom.

…Then lonely hours in the lab changed all that and I realized… Twitter is great for my attention needs! Then came fem-fATL.com and more followers, more friends, and more purpose. Twitter is so much more fun when you can @ someone. I forgot to mention how TweetDeck changed my life. I could not get on without TweetDeck. There is also bit.ly a url shortening service (brilliant) that made sharing information easier. And now that I adore Twitter, I’m not sure what else could be more fun then drunken tweets anymore!

For me, Twitter is only as much fun as the attention I get from it. The coolest thing about Twitter is that I have met the dopest people by connecting with them online. The people I follow on Twitter I generally keep to ATL folk, art & design peeps, or techno-geeks. With the majority in ATL it’s really dope to get to run into them when I’m out and about.

Following is a list of fem-fATL‘s you should be following on Twitter. This is my list of girls and I know there are handful more of you who make the cut, but we will get to you in the future! I wanted to start with a list of ATL Twitter ladies who:

@ijustwannab	She’s new on the Twitter thing, but this is our very own justB and if you follow our blog, you will realize that she write’s all the funny stuff. So please follow her (she really needs some followers). Help her cross over the rite of passage into Twitterdom.

@atlcutii	Tip: This chick just turned 21. I expect some wild’in out coming from her. She is a graphic designer who has just landed back in the ATL. You can expect to see her out and about and on the scene!

@cobradoll	She is a very talented artist from ATL, currently in the UK. While she’s out of the city at the moment, she’s well connected with the ATL folk. It’s also really cool to hear about the everyday things she’s doing over there!
@courtenaybird	She has the largest following by far of all the girls on this list and one of the first people I was following. Probably a bigger tech nerd then myself, she uses Twitter for journalistic purposes. She’s always posting relevant news about technology and social media. If your a news head or just like the whole hot&nerdy thing @ her.
@Dollface187	She’s a qualified fem-fATL. A fun-loving fashion student and stylist, she’s out and about, and rolls with us from time to time! If you are into fashion, she’s one to watch.
@jesciak	She’s an ATL socialite who is always on the move. It seems like she’s always on the travel from New York, Miami, the west coast, and of course here at home in the A. We love girls who have it together and know how to have fun and she’s definitely one of them!
@joyTolentino	She’s our home girl- She’s everyone’s home girl! And that’s because she’s just down! She’s a talented singer, songwriter, and hair stylist. She’s a bonifide fem-fATL sharing our love for sushi!
@Onibella	She’s a clear cut individual. Another fashionista, she has her own sense of style, and she rolls with our friends over at freshiam.net. A music head, I see her out on the indie scene for fests and performances. She’s dope boy fresh.
